Private Investigations

Private Investigation Services

Most people who contact a private investigator have never done so before. You may know that something is wrong, but not know what type of investigation you need. You may also feel nervous about making contact or worry that you will be pressured into spending money. As experienced private investigators in London, we will first listen to what has happened and explain, in plain English, whether we can help.

Our job is to help you replace uncertainty with reliable information. We can investigate relationship concerns, check important facts about a person, trace someone, document concerns involving a child, or help organise evidence of online harassment. Every enquiry is private, and you are not committing to anything by speaking with us.

You are not committing to anything by contacting us.

You do not need to choose the service yourself

Clients often describe a problem that could be handled in more than one way. For example, concerns about a new partner may be answered by a background investigation, while unexplained absences may be better suited to surveillance. A missing person enquiry may start with online and record searches, followed by a careful contact attempt if that is safe and appropriate.

We will ask what you need to know and what decision you are trying to make. We then explain the simplest investigation that could answer that question. If an investigation is unlikely to help, we will tell you.

How we can help private clients

Relationship, matrimonial and partner investigations

This service covers suspected infidelity, unexplained behaviour, possible cohabitation, divorce-related enquiries, partner background checks, pre-marital checks and concerns about someone met online. Depending on the situation, we may recommend surveillance, background research or a combination of the two.

Background checks and personal background investigations

A background check can help you verify important claims about a person before you place significant trust, responsibility or money in their hands. We agree the questions with you, check information that is legally available and explain clearly what was confirmed, what appears inconsistent and what could not be verified.

Child custody and safeguarding investigations

Where there is a genuine concern about a child, we may be able to record handovers, supervision, attendance at a location or contact with a particular person. The work is carefully limited and never involves approaching or secretly questioning a child.

People tracing, missing persons and welfare enquiries

We can help locate family members, witnesses, beneficiaries, former tenants and other people for a genuine reason. In sensitive family cases, we may offer to pass on a message instead of giving out someone’s home address.

Online harassment and digital investigations

If you are dealing with fake profiles, impersonation, repeated online abuse or a large collection of messages and screenshots, our Digital Investigations page explains how we can preserve, organise and investigate the available information.

What happens when you contact us

  1. You explain the situation in confidence. You do not need to use investigative or legal language.
  2. We identify the main question and explain what can realistically be found out.
  3. You receive a written quotation setting out the work, price and likely timescale.
  4. If you decide to proceed, we carry out the agreed investigation and keep you updated where appropriate.
  5. You receive a clear report explaining what was found, including any photographs or supporting information that form part of the investigation.

Discreet, legal and responsible

LPI is ex-military-led, ICO registered and fully insured. We work discreetly and only use legal methods. We do not hack accounts, read private messages, trespass, install spyware or obtain private bank information. We will not accept an instruction that appears intended to frighten, control or harass another person.

A good private investigator reports what actually happened, even when the result is not what the client expected. Our reports separate confirmed facts from information that remains uncertain, so you can make your next decision with a clearer understanding of the situation.

When another service is more appropriate

Immediate danger, threats of violence, a missing child or suspected abuse should be reported to the police or the appropriate safeguarding service. We may be able to help with later evidence gathering, but a private investigation should never delay emergency action.
