Online Relationship Background Check
Protecting a client before a financial commitment was made
A client contacted us after forming a relationship with someone they had met online. The relationship had developed quickly and daily communication had become routine, however the individual lived some distance away and meetings were repeatedly postponed.
The client was being asked to assist with a financial problem before they had met in person. They were unsure whether the situation was genuine but were concerned about causing offence by questioning it directly.
They wanted independent verification before making any decisions.
The Concern
The individual explained they were temporarily unable to access funds due to work circumstances abroad and requested financial help. While the explanations sounded plausible, several details did not fully align:
- video calls were avoided or brief
- travel plans were repeatedly cancelled
- personal documents could not be verified
- urgency around financial assistance increased
The client felt uncomfortable but did not want to wrongly accuse someone they cared about.
Objectives
We recommended a discreet background investigation to:
- verify the person’s identity
- confirm whether their claimed occupation and location were genuine
- identify any indicators of misrepresentation
- allow the client to make a safe decision
Our Approach
We carried out a structured background enquiry using lawful open-source intelligence and database checks based on the information and images provided.
We explained to the client beforehand what information could realistically be verified and what warning signs to look for in online relationships. No contact was made with the individual and the investigation remained entirely confidential.
Findings
Our enquiries established that the identity being presented online could not be independently verified and several profile elements were inconsistent across different sources.
We provided the client with a written report explaining the discrepancies in clear terms and outlined why the circumstances were high-risk.
The Outcome
The client chose not to send money and ceased contact.
Although the decision was emotionally difficult, it prevented a potentially significant financial loss. The client later reported that similar messages continued from different accounts, reinforcing that the situation had not been genuine.
The investigation allowed them to step back safely and avoid further involvement.
